Rainy Day Musical Games
for Happy Kids
Peakles and I often like to play outside in the the rain however there are times when it is not practical or the weather is just too wet and cold to play out. Sometimes we can go a little ‘stir crazy’ and I’ve found that musical games can often help lift a gloomy mood as well as being good fun too!
Here are some ideas to help chase away those Rainy Day Blues!
Silly Songs for Indoors and Outdoors
Try these both indoors and outdoors
Make up some silly rhyming songs to dance to!
This is a great way of extending your child’s vocabulary and gives you both an excuse to be a bit silly around the home with some silly dancing. Use props if you need to – for example grab a spoon and sing ‘I’m eating with my spoon and looking at the moon! Don’t worry about a tune – just make one up or use a nursery rhyme tune that you know.
Make up a muddy puddle song and splash about in the puddles!
This can be played outdoors or indoors. Just make sure that if you are playing outdoors you have a change of clothes and some towels to hand when you get back indoors! The song can contain words such as jump, splash, bounce, wet, raindrops, puddle, muddy. Let your child lead the song (and the jumping) and remember to join in with squeals and laughter!
Glove Puppets & Nursery Rhymes
An easy way to make gloves into nursery rhyme props:
Incy Wincy Spider & Little Miss Muffet
Use a black glove and spread your fingers out like a spider. Wiggle the fingers spider legs and make your spider run up and down the spout or drop down to frighten Miss Muffet. You can decorate your spider by adding add googly eyes or white stickers for eyes
10 ‘Green’ Bottles & Ten in the Bed
Wear a pair of green gloves, spread out all your fingers and sing 10 Green Bottles Sitting on the Wall. As each bottle falls reduce the amount of ‘bottles’ by folding one finger back. If you haven’t got green gloves then you can use any coloured ones – just change the song to pink or blue or whatever coloured bottles. Follow the same idea when singing ‘Ten in the Bed’. This is great fun and is good for practising your counting too.
Old MacDonald’s Toy Box
Place a variety of different toys in a box. Sing Old MacDonald had a Toy Box etc. Each child takes a toy out and has to sing the sound associated with the toy. For example a car would make a ‘brum’ noise and a toy cat would make a ‘meow’ noise. If you have things in the toy box that don’t make a noise such as a hat, then sing about the action that you would use such a ‘wear it here and wear it there’. Peakles loves playing this game and we sometimes have some weird and wonderful things in the box!
Make and Playing Instruments
Peakles likes improvising and exploring sound and movement. Here are a few ideas that she would like to share:
