A painted flower or plant pot is a brilliant way of making a lovely gift that costs very little and is a fun way to spend an afternoon too!

First we took some terracotta plant pots and plant pot holders and covered them with PVA glue – this would seal the pots and stop the poster paint from getting wiped off or water damaged.   Then Peakles covered one of the plant pots and the plant holders with a mixture of gold and PVA glue.

She painted the plant pot and the holder with the gold mixture and then pressed some crumpled up plastic onto the painted pot to give it an interesting textured finish.  We then left the pots and holders to dry.

Once all the pots and holders were dry Peakles added red paint to a paper plate and mixed it with some PVA glue.  She then dipped the heart-shaped sponge into the paint.  Once the sponge was well covered she then pressed the sponge onto the terracotta pot.  As the pot was turned she pressed the sponge again until she had a row of red hearts on the pot.  She also added a red heart to the bottom of the plant pot holder.

We added more PVA glue to some red and white paint.  Peakles mixed these together to make a lovely pink colour.  She gold plant pot and pressed the sponge onto it.  It made a lovely row of pink hearts.

Peakles repeated this with the remaining plant pots and holders.  We then left them to dry. Once they were thoroughly dried Peakles put some beautiful Primula flowers into the holders.

She gave one to her Granny and Grampa as a wedding anniversary present and the other two she gave to me for being a ‘lovely mother’ It felt like Mother’s Day had come early.  My flowers in their decorated pots are now on my kitchen windowsill and I must admit they bring a little bit of early spring colour into the room.

These are very easy to make and instead of sponges you could use hand printing, potato printing or just use crumpled paper to add the paint to the plant pot.   These are ideal for Valentine’s Day, for Mother’s Day or even a housewarming gift.
