Nature Inspired Dough for

Lively Sensory Play

Peakles and I are really excited about taking part in the 12 Months of Sensory Dough this year.  We love being outdoors and are always collecting things from walks along the beach or in the countryside.  This is one of the reasons why we are featuring Nature Inspired Dough – incorporating Outdoors and Nature into our dough theme each month.  For more information about the 12 Months of Sensory Dough then read about it on our main page here.

Nature Inspired Salt Dough Recipe

Please note that this is NOT an edible dough so should NOT be used unsupervised or with children who like to taste/eat dough!

2 cups of flour

1 cup of oats

1 cup of salt

2 cups of water

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

Yellow, Green and Red Food colouring.

Mix the food colouring with the oats in three separate bowls.

Add all the ingredients to a pan apart from the oats and mix them together.  Keep stirring as you heat the mixture on a low heat.  Be careful not to over cook or burn the mixture and it will finally become a dough.   Remove it from the heat and place on a heat proof surface.

Remember it will be hot.

Once it has cooled down enough to handle, divide the dough into three rounds.  Add the yellow, green and red dyed oats to each round.  Then knead until the oats are combined into the dough.

Playing and Exploring

We put the dough on the table and allowed Peakles a range of items to play with.  She also chose some stones and some sticks as tools for her nature inspired dough play.

She became engrossed in playing with the different coloured doughs, making flowers and leaves for the bees and butterflies.  She enjoyed looking for other materials to add to the dough and finding new twigs and pebbles for tools to use.

After a little while she began to combine the different coloured doughs together and she commented on how ‘bumpy’ the oats felt under her fingers.  She liked how the oats made the plain dough colourful.  She also noted how the colours combined together to make different colours as well.

Finally she made some little fairy cakes for the garden fairies and left them hidden in the corner of the garden!

(I later removed them just in case any wildlife tried to eat them!)

Nature Inspired Salt Dough

We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the 12 Months of Sensory Dough and we look forward to next month when we will be writing about our Nature Inspired Fizzy Dough.

If you are a fan of Pinterest then please pop along to the group’s Sensory Dough Board for more inspiration on how to introduce sensory play doughs to your children.  Here are this month’s co-hosts and links through to their posts.  Such a great wealth of ideas on how to create, experiment and play with Salt Dough!
