5 Amazingly Cool Summer Activities for Little Kids
Peakles loves being out in the garden or on the beach when the weather is nice and which kid doesn’t want to spend most of the summer outdoors?
We are aware that the summer holidays can seem to drag a little and that youngsters can get hot and cranky as well. So Peakles and I are going to share 5 amazingly cool summer activities for little kids!
Treasure Troving on the Beach
If you are lucky enough to live or be on vacation near the beach then this is an excellent way to keep youngsters occupied and not too bored.
First take some buckets and go on a treasure trove.
Look for shells, pebbles, dried seaweed and driftwood. Pop them into the buckets and see who has the biggest treasure trove!
If you are quick witted and nimble enough then you can hide some treats along the way for your youngsters to find, it could just be something simple like some painted stones or some small, written scrolls from the sand fairies!
Bring the Beach Home!
If you cannot visit the beach then why not make your own in your garden or yard! Get some play sand, a paddling pool, some beach towels and a windbreak.
Set up the beach corner with the sand in a sandpit or put it on a shower curtain, don’t forget the buckets and spades! Add water to the paddling pool and maybe a few plastic fish! Set out the towels and just let the kids play. In fact why not pull up a chair, grab a cool drink and join them!
Peakles loves doing this and it is so fun, doesn’t cause any lasting damage and is cheap too!
Take an empty washing up liquid bottle, a shampoo bottle or a plastic water bottle.
Fill with water and let the kids write their names or draw pictures by squeezing the water out of the bottle and onto the hot tarmac or paving slabs. On a hot day the water writing will soon disappear and the kids can make new words or drawings!
Make a Cool Den
Depending on where you this summer a good den can help to keep the kids in one place and under cover too. This is ideal when the summer is hot and you are trying to keep the kids out of the sun!
Use some cotton bedsheets or duvet covers to make a den. Try to use white or light ones as this will help to reflect the light and keep inside cool. We use the corner of the decking and secure the edge of the sheet on the floor with some heavy books or stones. Inside add some cushions, cool sheets and some magazines or books. A pack of cards or a simple board game can be a great way of keeping them occupied and under cover too.
If you find that inside the den is hot why not add some coloured cooler bottles which are fun to make and keep the inside of the den cool.
Make a Cooler Bottle
These are a great way of recycling plastic bottles and for keeping areas cool too! For slightly older kids glitter and shells or small toys can be added which can be great fun when the ice starts to melt. Cooler bottles should always be used under supervision, not thrown or kicked and not placed directly onto the skin.
You will need:
Fill the bottles with water until they are just over three quarters full and add the food colouring. Place in a freezer. Once nearly frozen remove the cooler bottle and pop in the den, on the grass or under a blanket to help cool it down.
You can also decorate your cooler bottles on the outside and add glitter or small toys to the water. Try adding gelatine or jello/jelly to the bottle before freezing for an extra ‘gloopy’ looking cooler bottle.
Once they start to defrost they can be shook and you can create slushy waves inside the bottle!
